چکیده

A description of eight zoonotic diseases investigated at the Division of Virus Research, lnstitute for Medical Research, is given. They include leptospirosis, rabies, influenza, Japanese encephalitis, toxoplasmosis, ornithosis, Q fever and monkeypox. Of these, Q fever and monkeypox were found to be of little public health significance in this country. Ornithosis in large populat ion~ of pigeons could pose a problem to their human contacts and this possibility should be borne in mind in the investigation of pyrexia of unknown origin. Rabies is not endemic in Malaysia and occurs sporadically mainly in the states bordering on Thailand from where rabid animals, especially dogs, enter. Leptospirosis, influenza, Japanese encephalitis and toxoplasmosis are endemic in Malaysia and the relationship of these infections between infected animals and their human contacts i s discussed.

Phylogeographic Evidence for 2 Genetically Distinct Zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi Parasites, Malaysia

Infections of humans with the zoonotic simian malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi occur throughout Southeast Asia, although most cases have occurred in Malaysia, where P. knowlesi is now the dominant malaria species. This apparently skewed distribution prompted an investigation of the phylogeography of this parasite in 2 geographically separated regions of Malaysia, Peninsular Malaysia and Mal...

Molecular characterization of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium isolated from human, food, and animal sources in Malaysia.

Salmonella Typhimurium is an important nontyphoidal Salmonella serovar associated with foodborne diseases in many parts of the world. This organism is the major causative agent of nontyphoidal salmonellosis in Malaysia. We aimed to investigate the genetic profiles of the strains isolated from clinical, zoonotic, and dietary sources in Malaysia using multilocus variable number tandem repeat anal...

Molecular Evidences of Ehrlichiosis as an Emerging Zoonotic Disease in Kerman City

Background and Aims: Ehrlichiosis is an emerging tick-borne zoonotic disease caused by the gramnegative coccid obligate intracellular bacteria of the family Anaplasmataceae. Since the only available evidence in regard to monocytic Ehrlichiosis in Iran is related to dogs, the present study was designed to use the polymerase chain reaction assay for confirming the presence of Ehrlichia spp. in...

A study on prevalence of some helminthic infections of the liver and lungs among ruminants in abattoir of Fars province, Iran

Zoonotic helminths are often transmitted to humans through domestic animals. This retrospective study was performed to estimate the prevalence of some important zoonotic helminthic infections of the liver and lung including echinococcosis, fasciolosis and dicrocoeliasis in Kazerun and Shiraz abattoirs, Fars, Iran, during 2011-2013.
